about

MSEP 19 - Assign - After the music of Dr James Saunders. I first met Dr Sunders when I travelled up to Huddersfield to visit the music Dept. there - specifically their lecturer in Contemporary music, a man I felt I had to meet, at the home of the famous Cm festival - Dr James Saunders. He was very kind, he should have chased me out with a broom ! He listened to my 'Moment of a Butterfly [Em Vol. 16], and invited me to join the improvisation group - for a session, ['Huddersfield Impromptu - 3 Undirected pieces' - on my 'Julian Broadhurst Bandcamp' main page]. He also gave me a copy of his 'Modular' work '#Unassigned - which you had to then create for yourself from a kit of parts, uniquely each time, and then assign it a number as a Date.
I only had one CD player, so I created a hard listening Copy. But whist I had it in the screen, me being what I am, the temptation was too much, and things started to happen to it. I felt very bad and wrote to tell him apologising profusely. He wasn't angry at, a natural educator to a student composer. He invited me to go further, bless him I did and sent four versions to him - he wasn't personally taken with them, but would be happy if I always would mention their origin. He was so right, he had liked 'Moment of a Butterfly', it remains unchained, my assignments were worthless, and they went in the draw. A good while later, during one of several Deep reassessments of my works, I thought about the concept of these pieces, and decided to take him at his word and incorporate them into my woks, creating a new four volume version of them, recreating them from the start - as 'Assign - After the music of Dr James Saunders' - they would now join my works as MSEP 19. Of the music, there is no explanation - the sound is all there is - but I hope there is resourcefulness here and that they can be part of the extended family of Assignments, that many people have created for various combinations of instruments. "And here is mine, so et it be known . . ." - [The Smiths - 'What difference dose it make'].
